Ingo Simonis did his master in ecology with emphasis in geoinformatics at the universities of Muenster, Germany and Joensuu, Finland.
After his studies, he worked as a research associate and assistant professor at the Institute for Geoinformatics of the University in Muenster. During this time, he formed the research group "Sensor Web" which addresses the integration of heterogeneous data into IT-infrastructures in the context of the Sensor Web. He had a leading role in the initiative Sensor Web Enablement by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) from the beginning.
He is currently the author of four OGC specifications and member of the OGC Interoperability Projects Team. After finishing his Ph.D. in early 2006 with distinction, he spent another year as an assistant professor at the University of Muenster and as a research group leader at the Meraka Institute, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Pretoria, South Africa.
He co-founded the international research platform "Sensor Web Alliance" and the open source initiative "52°North" during this time. Since October 2006, he is actively involved in the Group on Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) after successfully submitting a new task addressing Sensor Web. In 2007, he co-founded the International Geospatial Services Institute, continues his role as a research leader at Meraka and leads the Sensor Web Community at 52°North.
